The release of the book How We See: Photobooks by Women (10x10 Photobooks, 2018 and 2019) marked an important turning point in how women's photobooks are studied and collected.
According to a research conducted by the American organization that published the book, between 2013 and 2017 only 16% of the volumes on sale online and in the major bookstores were made by women, whereas the production is substantially equivalent.
Beside co-editing The Gould Collection, writing and collecting, Russet Lederman is co-founder of 10 x 10 Photobooks. She will talk about her own experience and introduce publications from these internationally renowned publishing ventures.
Jenya Fridlyand, photographer and educator based in New York City and the Hudson Valley, is the author of Entrance to the Valley, artist book shortlisted at the Paris Photo-Aperture First Photobook Award in 2017 and now realeased by TIS Books. Fridlyand is also co-founder of Image Threads, a non-profit photobook teaching collective.
Andrea Modica is an American photographer and professor now living in Philadelphia; a Guggenheim Fellow and Fulbright Scholar, she has already published eleven monographs with prestigious publishers (including Nazraeli Press and L'Artiere), while she is working on the publication of a new volume with TIS Books called Discipline Equestri.
Three women, three important experiences in the international photobook world. The talk is organized in connection with the pop-up store at Micamera and perfectly in line with the festival’s statement: Deconstructing stereotypes.
