“In 2018, when we were working on the accelerating warming of the Arctic (Arctic: New Frontier by Yuri Kozyrev and Kadir van Lohuizen), we decided not to show any polar bears. This year, Tommaso Protti won the 10th Carmignac Photojournalism Award to carry out a project on the social impact of deforestation in the Amazon. I don’t believe in the sentimental image which distracts viewers from the discussion - and strengthens in their convictions – and without this conversation we will never get into action. Tommaso Protti – laureate of the 10th Carmignac Photojournalism Award - will present his photographic project « Amazônia : Life and death in the Brazilian Amazon » by explaining how he approached the issue of the Amazon and its deforestation. He will be presenting how from the eastern region of Maranhão to the western region of Rondônia, through the states of Pará and Amazonas, he portrayed life in modern day Brazilian Amazon, where social and humanitarian crises overlap with the ongoing destruction of the rainforest, lungs of the planet. Emeric Glayse, curator and director of the award, will follow up this conference by questioning the stand and value of photography on capturing the ungraspable issue of the environmental crisis and climate change on a global scale.

Emeric Glayse
Emeric Glayse was appointed Director of Carmignac Photojournalism Award (Prix Carmignac du photojournalisme) in 2015. Since joining the Fondation Carmignac, he has organized the exhibitions and published the books Blank pages of an Iranian photo album by Newsha Tavakolian (Magnum Photos, 2015), Colony by Christophe Gin (2015), Libya: A human marketplace by Narciso Contreras (2016), The Trap: Trafficking of Women in Nepal by Lizzie Sadin (2017), and Arctic: New Frontier by Yuri Kozyrev & Kadir van Lohuizen (NOOR, 2018) and he curated the Photojournalism Award retrospective 2009-2015 at Saatchi Gallery (2016) - the most visited photojournalism exhibition in 2016 (Source: The Art Newspaper).In 2015, Glayse has transformed the Award to turn it into an “editorial room”. This major development allowed Narciso Contreras, 7th laureate, to return with the very first evidence of migrant slavery in Libya - a report that was first published in Paris Match and Time in October 2016. With the development of partnerships with major European museums – Palazzo Reale in Milan, Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in Paris, … – the Award exhibition attracted over 500,000 visitors in 2017.Founder and formerly artistic director of nofound (2008-2012), the young photography fair in Paris, co-director of the contemporary art space Mycroft (2009-2010) and co-creator of düo (2013-2014), a gallery-bookshop-café hybrid, Glayse organized, curated and produced a number of projects and exhibitions devoted to contemporary photographers and artists using photography, including Elinor Carucci and Ren Hang (New Documents, 2011), JH Engström and Alec Soth (Bedroom, 2010), Richard Kern (Kern and Sons, 2009), and Ed Templeton (Make up Girls, 2012 and Paris Photo, 2014).
Glayse has published on contemporary photography and written articles on emerging photographers for magazines such as Art Review. He has run a year workshop on “curating photography” at the École nationale supérieure de la photographie (ENSP) in 2012. Nominator for masterclasses such as the Joop Swart (World Press Photo), he has intervened, as juror, reviewer and lecturer, in the major photography events as Les Rencontres d’Arles.
Tommaso Protti (Italy, 1986) lives and works in São Paulo, Brazil. He started his career as a photographer in 2011 after graduating in Political Science and International Relations. Since then, he has devoted himself on creating his own long-term projects. His work has been exhibited internationally at The Royal Albert Hall (London), Greenwich Heritage Centre (Woolwich, UK), Benaki Museum (Athens), MACRo (Rome), 10b Photography gallery (Rome), Fotoleggendo festival (Rome), Les Rencontres d’Arles festival (France), Prix Bayeux- Calvados des Correspondants de guerre festival (France), Belfast Photo festival (Ireland), C40 Mayors Summit (Mexico City), UN COP 22 (Marrakesh, Morocco), PARTE Contemporary Art Fair (São Paulo, Brazil). His photographs have been published in major titles including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time, National Geographic, The New Yorker, The Guardian, The Independent, Le Monde, Corriere della Sera, among others. He also works with international organizations such as the United Nations. Tommaso is a member of Angustia.

“Nel 2018, quando lavoravamo sul tema del riscaldamento globale nell’Artide (Arctic: New Frontier di Yuri Kozyrev e Kadir van Lohuizen), decidemmo di non mostrare nessun orso polare. Quest’anno, Tommaso Protti ha vinto il 10mo Premio Carmignac per il Fotogiornalismo per realizzare un progetto sull’impatto sociale della deforestazione della foresta Amazzonica. Non credo nell’immagine sentimentale, che distrae il pubblico dalla discussione e ne rafforza le convinzioni, senza questo tipo di confronto non passeremo mai all’azione. Tommaso Protti, vincitore della 10ma edizione del Premio Carmignac per il Fotogiornalismo, presenterà il suo progetto intitolato “Amazzonia: vita e morte nella foresta pluviale brasiliana”, spiegando come abbia affrontato il tema della deforestazione della foresta amazzonica. Parlerà di come, dalla regione orientale di Maranhão a quella occidentale della Rondônia, attraverso gli stati di Pará e Amazonas, abbia rappresentato la vita nella foresta amazzonica brasiliana dei giorni nostri, in cui la crisi sociale e umanitaria si sovrappone alla continua distruzione della foresta pluviale, il polmone verde del Pianeta. Poi la parola passerà a Emeric Glayse, curatore e direttore del Premio, che si interrogherà sulla posizione e sul valore della fotografia nel catturare una problematica tanto inafferrabile qual è quella della crisi ambientale e del cambiamento climatico su scala mondiale.

Emeric Glayse è stato nominato Direttore del Premio Carmignac per il Fotogiornalismo [Prix Carmignac du photojournalisme] nel 2015.
