Looking for Love by Daragh Soden
About the project
In 2018 I was commissioned by The Photographers' Gallery in London to make a new body of work for an exhibition called “Shot In Soho” curated by Karen McQuaid and Julian Rodriguez and also featuring William Klein, Anders Petersen and Corinne Day amongst others. The work I made, “Looking for Love”, examines how we search, perform and relate in the pursuit of love. The series includes traditional photographs, screenshots from dating apps and a short Super8 film. The film examines the nature of love and how people go about finding it. The idea was a kind of nod to the past. I met the narrator at a karaoke event in Soho (named Bearakoe after it’s clientele of a certain type of gay man). I asked if I could film him singing. He sang Can’t Help Falling In Love With You and the recording provides the soundtrack for the short film. I then asked if I could interview him and his partner about their lives and love. His voice narrates the piece from start to finish.
