Vogue Italia’s September issue: the 100 covers

With the September issue, as customary the most important of the year, Vogue Italia presents to its readers a unique and very special project: a collector’s issue featuring 100 protagonists for 100 covers. Celebrated models and actresses, artists and “ordinary” women, all of them special – all with their unique story to tell.

Vogue will be hitting newsstands once again with a collectible issue where the numbered covers become a work of art themselves, a manifesto for fashion addressing everyone, embracing diversity and inclusion. «Last April, when we decided to leave our cover white, we were convinced that silence was the right message of respect and reserveEmanuele Farneti, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Italia writes in his editor’s letter. «Now, instead, with the onset of a new season that will in many ways be critical, we think this is the moment to raise our voices and talk about hope and beauty. For the first time, we have shot and printed 100 covers. Each of them is dedicated to an individual protagonist – different by age, physical appearance or the color of their skin. It is the portrait of a community that, having waited diligently, now finds itself making a fresh start, in full respect of the distancing and time restrictions dictated by the context.»

The cover stars include iconic supermodels Cindy Crawford, Pat Cleveland, Patti Hansen, Donna Jordan. Top models du jour Kaia Gerber, Bella Hadid, Julia Nobis, Freja Beha Erichsen, Sasha Pivovarova, Irina Shayk, Alek Wek, Raquel Zimmermann, Saskia De Brauw, Rebecca Longendyke. Instagram stars such as Emily Ratajkowski and Paloma Elsesser. Actresses like Chloë Sevigny. Up-and-coming talents. Non-binary, genderless or transgender models, like Indya Moore, Juno Mitchell or Cici Tamiz, on the frontline in the fight for LGBTQI+ rights. Black activists such as Bethann Hardison. And then again, the pioneers: Ugbad Abdi, the first to walk down a catwalk donning a hijab, or Precious Lee, the first plus-size model of color to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. But also Cameron Russell and Trish Goff, both key figures in the  #metoo movement. Asian model Ash Foo, back on the catwalk after undergoing chemotherapy. Models, activists, writers, photographers and world-renowned artists such as Dominique Durosea, who explores racism, black feminism and gender; the deputy director of New York’s New Museum Karen Wong and star architect Gisue Hariri. The covers also highlight “ordinary” women, like Uber driver Debra Solomon, or softball player Jade Meehan. An interesting fact: the cover stars also include Cassi Namoda and Delphine Desane, two of the artists behind the covers of Vogue Italia’s “Illustrated Issue” (January 2020).

«We wanted to challenge the standards of quantity with which fashion has always measured itself,» Ferdinando Verderi, Vogue Italia’s creative director, commented about the September issue «to express a desire for rebirth and to celebrate diversity and uniqueness in a way that becomes a collective experience. We photographed the 100 cover stars individually in a studio in New York. The photographer Mark Borthwick is one of the long-standing contributors to Vogue Italia who returns to the pages of the magazine after decades. The cast brings together, side by side, 100 people from a wide range of fields based in NYC. We asked each one of them to tell us their life story in a one-minute video. The result is a highly significant document, testifying to a unique moment in time
