J Lo Says She Wanted to Leave Hollywood After Jokes About Her Green Versace Dress

Jennifer Lopez's "Halftime" documentary just dropped on Netflix, offering an exclusive glimpse at the superstar's life during a particularly busy time. The film primarily focuses on how she prepared to headline the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show in the months following the release of her hit movie "Hustlers." She called the NFL event "an incredible opportunity to show the world who I am." For the performance, Lopez wore several custom Versace outfits, including, most notably, a sheer bodysuit with reflective silver embroideries that lined her legs and formed a halter-neck top.

Going behind the scenes of her rehearsal, Lopez welcomes viewers into her inner world, sharing her thoughts on the iconic jungle-themed Versace gown she wore to the 2000 Grammys. She reveals that she chose it at the last minute, going against people who told her she couldn't pull it off. J Lo's green Versace dress was an instantly iconic red carpet moment - so much so that it essentially led to the creation of Google Images.

But for all the acclaim surrounding the look, Lopez was also targeted by negative comments. The sleeveless design featured a plunging neckline, an open back, and a maxi skirt, which she held open to reveal her bedazzled briefs. The documentary shows a series of clips featuring jokes about her body. "When I started working, the beauty ideal was very thin: blond, tall, and not a lot of curves," Lopez says. "I grew up around women with curves, so it was nothing I was ever ashamed of. It was hard when you think people think you're a joke, like you're a punch line." The star reveals that the mockery almost made her quit Hollywood. Ultimately, however, Lopez revisited the infamous look and wore a sleeveless iteration of the green dress to close the Versace show during Milan Fashion Week in 2019. The dress has also inspired several celebrities to wear the exact same dress for different occasions. Scroll on to see more of Lopez's outfits in her new "Halftime" documentary.
